Plex Live TV is something that the Plex team has been teasing for a while now and the feature is now available for Plex users to install and try out. With Plex Pass and a compatible tuner, you can now sync your tuner’s live over-the-air (OTA) channels into Plex and watch and record live TV free of charge.
What is Plex Live TV
Plex Live TV is the Plex teams solution to live TV. No longer will Plex Pass members be limited to watch content already saved in your Plex library or accessed through a Plex Channel. Now, you can setup one of Plex’s compatible TV tunes and record and watch the latest Game of Thrones episode, for example, whenever you want in the convenience of your home.
Live TV tuners allow you to access OTA channels in your home free of charge. If you want to know what channels you can get with your TV tuner, you can check out this link and search by your zip code in order to find out what is available in your area.
In major cities across the USA, you can get up to 96 of the top 100 most viewed cable networks, including channels such as ABC, FOX, NBC and CBS.
As of today, you can only stream Live TV directly on iOS, Android, and the NVidia Shield, but Plex has promised to include more of its services as time goes on.
How to Install Plex Live TV
To install Live TV you need two things: Plex Pass and a compatible tuner. Previously, Plex only supported HDHomeRun Tuners. Today, with the rollout of Plex Live, more popular tuners were added such as models from Hauppauge and AVerMedia. Click here to see the whole list of tuners that Plex supports here.
